If you have an opportunity to venture out of the city, check out St. Marks National Wildlife Reserve, 68,000 acres hosting a variety of coastal habitats on the Gulf of Mexico. The reserve was originally designed as a refuge for wintering birds, but it’s also home to a range of local wildlife from black bears to coyotes to bobcats.
If you’re more of a gearhead than a treehugger, stop by the Tallahassee Antique Car Museum, a museum displaying more than 140 antique automobiles. Big hitters include Abraham Lincoln’s funeral hearse and three different Batmobiles.
Want something off the beaten path in Atlanta (and not housed in a museum exhibit? Check out the Krog Street Tunnel, a showcase for ever-evolving street art. There’s not an unpainted inch of the underpass–people have even painted marriage proposals on the walls.
